Steering Rack Clamp Upgrade
Print Email
The Saab NG900 and OG9-3 is effected badly by torque-steer, particularly in higher powered models. An essential and reasonably cheap upgrade for your customised Saab is a steering rack clamp upgrade. You can upgrade just the clamp on it’s own, although most supply the option of a brace for further rigidity. Once fitted the brace will dramatically improve the torque-steer problem. Overall you will notice that the steering feels tighter than standard with good steering response and no added noise. There are a number of companies that provide performance steering rack and clamp kits: Genuine Saab (LHD): http://www.genuinesaab.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=36
Parts for Saabs (RHD): 12 months of development work! Click image for link-
Abbott Racing: http://www.abbottracing.com/2003/tuning/9-3/chassis/9-3_rackclamp.htm (LHD and RHD options). Now very well priced! Locating the steering rack clamp: The steering rack clamp is a U shaped clamp located to the passenger side (RHD) on the bulkhead next to the ‘elephant trunk’. Fitting the clamp: Lift up bonnet. Place a large cloth or sheet on the passenger-side wing of your car (RHD). The car does not have to be jacked-up. Remove the 13mm bolt and screw using a socket wrench and remove the clamp from the car. Your new clamp will have a backing piece. Slip behind the steering rack and move into place. Add the ‘C’ of the clamp to the front of the steering rack (push hard) and first fit the new bottom nut and tighten gently with your hand. Now screw in (again with your hand) the bottom bolt. Once both are in place tighten fully with the socket wrench. Welcome to a better car... |
